Re: [HSS] Restoration
David, it all depends on whether you want an obsolutely mint original
restoration, or whether in the interests of safety in travelling modern
traffic, and practicality, you want to fit such things as indicators or
modern shock absorbers. Modifications you can make that don't show are
things such as re-profiling the camshaft for better performance and economy,
shaving the cylinder head by around .060 to better use modern unleaded
fuel, and blanking off the heat exchanger so that the engine gets cold air
instead of pre-heated, which upsets volumetric efficiency. I have seen
indicators fitted by setting an extra bulb in the side lights, and fitting
an additional tail light, and using an extra bulb within, hence a reasonably
"original" look. You can also use modern soft brake shoe linings which
enhance the stopping power considerably. Otherwise, your Hudson will go
perfectly well in it's original configuration. Usually the shock absorbers
are pretty shot by now, and it is difficult to rebuild them, so I have taken
the step of fitting a different type (Armstrong), on the front of my '29,
and telescopics on the rear, which is a very easy modification to do, and
can be unbolted at any stage and originals fitted if necessary. However, the
telescopics are just so much more more efficient than the originals I doubt
if I will ever remove them. I have also fitted a later model generator on
the left side of the motor, driven by the fan belt. with a voltage
regulator, and quartz halogen headlamp bulbs, whilst still keeping it at 6
volts. this keeps the battery charged, withour boiling the liquid out of it
on lobg runs as can happen with the original generator. conversely, if you
set the charge rate back, the battery discharges with the lights on, hence
the change. it couldbe restored to original at any time. It is arguable
about changing over to 12 v, as this doubles the load on the starter. Any
comments from other members?
