Water pump packings.

Both the '29 Hudsons, and the '26 that I
recently worked on had badly leaking water pump glands.  I had brought some
packings with me that I fitted, and completely cured the problem.  For some
reason, the rear packing always seems to leak worse than the front, probably due
to vibration from the generator drive coupling.   Anyway, the packings
in the shafts concerned were the wrong type, being string-wound wire and were
not good at sealing the water in, and the string winding out the end of the
gland nuts.  Once worn through the outer string, the wire cuts the shaft
badly.   Whie Teflon is unsuitable, as this is intended for
stationary installations, as are other types.   What you need is a 5
mm  square section graphite impregnated packing, installed with a copious
amount of anti-sieze paste.   This will work on even a very worn shaft
and once seated will hardly ever need replacing.   To this end, I can
supply a complete kit of 6 rings  for U.S.$25  including  airmail
postage.  If interested, send me either a cheque or cash and I'll post by
return mail.  This applies to all Hudson Super
Sixes.
