Re: [HSS] Oil Changes
I get into this ...............Theo has the
experience, that also ( here in Holland anyway) Volvo describes also Mobil 1 for
the daily used vehicles and the interval in changing oil = 15.000 km's
! Mobil 1 have a great positive effect on the engine......also
my Volvo 240 stationcar of 11 years old and about 400.000 km's behind its teeth

Subject: [HSS] Oil Changes
Hello Guys and Gals,
I'm going to post a topic which
will no doubt stir up a certain amount
of disagreement: Motor
oil. Some time ago I did some fairly
extensive research on popular
oil brands, comparing mainly Pour Point
(degrees F), Flash Point (degrees
F), % ash, and % zinc. This
research led me to believe that three of
the best motor oils available
are Amsoil, Mobil 1 Full Synthetic, and
Valvoline SynPower. I
researched both synthetic and conventional
oils, and as expected,
synthetics win in side-by-side comparison.
Amsoil is a good product,
but I refuse to use it because they cannot spell
Porsche on their
bottles (Porche). Back in my mechanicing days I used
conventional
Valvoline. The fact that Mobil 1 is factory fill on a
lot of fine
vehicles (Chevrolet Corvette, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Dodge
Viper,
Porsche) led me in that direction. Most old cars, our
Hudsons
included, suggest using a "Medium-heavy bodied oil that will flow
at
low temperatures". Bearing this in mind, on these vehicles I
use
Mobil 1 15W-50.
Now, for the question. How often to change
oil? The manual suggests
500 miles. But, as we know, motor oil
technology in the Super Six
days left a lot to be desired. Today we
have multiweight synthetic
detergent oils that are designed to encapsulate
and suspend
contaminant particles within the oil and prevent those
particles from
contacting critical surfaces. But, the flipside is, we
still don't
have oil filters.
On modern cars using synthetic
oil with a good filter I typically
change at 5,000 miles. Using
conventional oil, at 3,000.
Could I get some feedback on Super Six oil
change intervals?
Best Regards,
James
