29 Gas Tank R&R

Twice in two weeks my '29 Hudson has been a tow job due to blocked fuel filters. The first time coming back from Pasadena to Fullerton the car made it 25 miles or so. This past Saturday with a new filter installed, I made it to the gas station, filled up and about 3 mile toward the meeting place for the tour.

I have had this car for ten years and have had to change the filter every couple of years when it became too blocked up to drive. Now the situation has gotten a lot worse and the (now full) tank will have to come out.

This was a pretty simple process on the '26 when I did that car some years ago. Everything was easy to see and the job was unremarkable. The '29 tank is hidden behind all sorts of stuff. What has to come off to get it out? Are there any tricks to doing it without marring the paint on the car?

The first part of the job will be to offload a full tank of contaminated gas. Lew mentioned an electric syphon/pump can be purchased, but how should the fuel be filtered for reuse? Would coffee filters do the job?
