Re: [HSS] Dual Side Mounts ??

As far as I can ascertain, the well was the same size for long and short

wheelbase cars. Indeed, they used the same guards (sorry fenders for you

gringos!) on both series, the only difference is that the mounting bracket

is swapped from side to side, so the bolt holes are in different positions,

as the headlamps sit further back on the long wheelbase cars. The wheel

size was 600 19" for short wheelbase and 600 18" for l.w.b., with all l.w.b.

cars having wire wheels, and optional for s.w.b. along with wood spokes and

split rims. They use the same clamp, which does have a padlock (made of

unobtainium). I have one original padlock, and have made a swivel cover for

the other side with "Hudson Super Six" etched on it. I can get a clamp cast

for you if you like, out of bronze. Some of the tyres (tires!) available

today, are too large to fit the well. For instance, I have Lester 650 19's

on my '29 7 passenger sedan, which has wood wheels instead of the original

wires. These give a good gear ratio, as they are a huge diameter tyre, but

if I have a puncture I have to leave the tyre deflated to get it to fit the

well, as it is too fat. The original 600 18's I had on my first 7 passenger

sedan fit the well real good, as do the 600 19's on the spare rims of my

current car. It would not be too hard a job for a good panel man to make up

a wheel well, and the stay is also a pretty easy engineering job. If not

this would have to be manufactured as well. But certainly easier if you

can find another with the well aready there. The side bracket would be a

bit trickier to cast, but could be done. Do you have the threaded moulding

mounted to the bulkhead? Good luck,

Geoff.
