Re: [HSS] Re: Valve Tappet Adjustment ?

I have covered this topic many times, including an article in the W.T.N.

Basically, you need to follow the firing order 153624 to do it easily and

quickly. Wind the engine over until No. 1 valve is fully open. In the case

of the F-head Hudsons (late'27-'29) this is the inlet. You then adjust it's

opposite number, that is No. 6 inlet valve. There will always be two

valves fully open at the same time, one inlet and one exhaust, in the front

and rear valve chambers alternatively. So you check which exhaust valve is

open at the same time as No. 1 inlet, and adjust it's opposite number in the

rear section of the valve chamber. Having done that, you wind the engine

over 1/6 of a turn, watching No. 5 inlet valve to open fully, and adjust the

two relevant opposite valves. By the time you have wound the engine over

one complete turn you have adjusted all the tappets. An easy way of

figuring which valve to adjust is to number them thus as if you are looking

unto the tappet chamber - 123456 654321 the first set of numbers being the

rear half of the engine, and the second set the front. Thus whichever two

valves are open, you just count and adjust the same number in the other end.

Another point - on the '29 Hudsons, which have offset rockers, check the

clearance at the valve end of the rocker, not the push rod.

Geoff.
