Crankshaft, Transmission

Hi Gang,

I noticed a bottom end rattle, very minor, in my Hudson this afternoon

and immediately drove it two blocks back to my house and pulled the

oil pan off. Seems I have a loose rod bearing. Second time this has

happened in this engine, previous owner rebabbited a rod many (30)

years ago. My loose one is shimmed, so I may just be able to pull

some shims out. Otherwise, I will have to repour a rod. I need to

know first- what should the rod and main bearing clearances be, and

secondly, what are the crankshaft journal diameters exactly, for rod

and main? (I am going to check all the clearances while I am in there.

The good news is, other than a loose rod, everything else looks pristine.

Secondly- my transmission filler plug refuses to come loose, as the

square head is broken. Therefore I filled the transmission through

the shifter. Question - how much does it hold? Obviously I can't

fill it to the filler plug. I have seen a bit of discussion in the

archives about weight; the manual says a light bodied transmission

oil, so I used 85W-140. Is this kosher?

Best Regards,

James Coats
