Re: [HSS] Crankshaft, Transmission
James, the correct clearance is "virtually none". The instruction book
says that end play of the rod should be difficult to feel by hand, but
should move freely with a light tap with a hammer. Pretty inexact really.
I have found the easiest way to check for correct clearance is to fold a
short length of cooking foil four times, to give a thickness of .002", trim
to 1/4" wide, drop the bearing cap low enough to insert this into the
bearing, and re-tighten. If you have the correct clearance it should bind
when turned over by hand (using the flywheel, spark plugs removed). If it
turns freely, drop the cap, remove one thin shim from each side, re-tighten
and try again. If it then binds with the foil in place, and turns freely
without, you should be okay. Good luck,
Geoff.
