On The Road Again!
Yesterday I finished the 1929 Hudson, at least enough to drive. The second taillight had to go for now. I just couldn't get it back on. I sure don't know how you manage the installation of the bumper and luggage rack Geoff, they were as much as I could manage by myself!
In the end, I left off the luggage rack as it is no use to me as it is and the long brackets have yet to be sorted. A project for next year!
At last it came time for a drive. The car starts very easily and the new vacuum tank functions wonderfully. The car really does have improved torque and will pull away on top gear from very low speed. The brakes are also very good, progressive and confidence inspiring. The clutch which had been terrible is now much improved with only light judder.
On the negative side, the gas gauge on which so much treasure & time was spent does not work. It resolutely indicates empty even when the tank is full. It was checked several times and worked until installed. What a disappointment!
Worst of all, that damn Marvel carbie is still a cross between a carbie & an on/off switch. Anywhere the throttle is normally used it just bogs, splits, backfires & is pretty useless. Grab a great footfull of throttle and your OK. Yes, the car can be driven, but it is sure no pleasure which is too bad as Geoff's work has otherwise rendered this car a real sweetie.
Some years ago, Dave Kostansik sold me a rebuilt Carter BB-1 carbie as was sold back in the day to replace the evil natured Marvels. Perhaps it's time to admit defeat and cobble up the adapter required and just install it. Has anyone ever messed with these things? Are they really an improvement?
