Re: [HSS] On The Road Again!
Paul, I'm dissapointed the carby is not
workingproperly, as when I drove the car, once it warmed up it was
fine. I do have a theory though, as the sma ehting happens with Lew's car,
that it spits back through the carby when cold. We overcame this somewhat
by fitting stronger spring. However, my car does not do this at all when
cold. It needs full choke to start, then runs with the choke knob out
about an inch for a minute, then it is fine. The difference is
that both your car and Lew's have very thick metal in the intake pipe through
the hot box, whereas mine has a thin stainless tube. The original tubes
were thin exhaust tubing. I think it could be an airflow problem.
I have a spare Marvel carb and hot box which works
perfectly on my car, which I am willing to send over to you to try on your
car. If it works, keep it and send me yours and I'll test it out on my
car. Let me know if you want to do this. It would cost a
bit for postage, but you decide if you want to experiment.

enough to drive. The second taillight had to go for now. I just couldn't get
it back on. I sure don't know how you manage the installation of the bumper
and luggage rack Geoff, they were as much as I could manage by
myself!
In the end, I left off the luggage rack as it is no use to me
as it is and the long brackets have yet to be sorted. A project for next
year!
At last it came time for a drive. The car starts very easily and
the new vacuum tank functions wonderfully. The car really does have improved
torque and will pull away on top gear from very low speed. The brakes are also
very good, progressive and confidence inspiring. The clutch which had been
terrible is now much improved with only light judder.
On the negative
side, the gas gauge on which so much treasure & time was spent does not
work. It resolutely indicates empty even when the tank is full. It was checked
several times and worked until installed. What a disappointment!
Worst
of all, that damn Marvel carbie is still a cross between a carbie & an
on/off switch. Anywhere the throttle is normally used it just bogs, splits,
backfires & is pretty useless. Grab a great footfull of throttle and your
OK. Yes, the car can be driven, but it is sure no pleasure which is too bad as
Geoff's work has otherwise rendered this car a real sweetie.
Some years
ago, Dave Kostansik sold me a rebuilt Carter BB-1 carbie as was sold back in
the day to replace the evil natured Marvels. Perhaps it's time to admit defeat
and cobble up the adapter required and just install it. Has anyone ever messed
with these things? Are they really an improvement?
