Paul sorry to hear of your embarrassing experience,
but people making statements like that are acting from ignorance, and I consider
grossly ungracious. The most likely problem is something stuck
in the carburettor throat, holding the interior suction bell up.
However, it could also be something silly like the condensor falling off.
You need to insert your finger in the throat of the carbie and see if the
bell is going up and down. It could also be a bit of grit in the dashpot part of
the assembly. I have a spare carby here if you desperately need
