Re: [HSS] Tire Sources (was: New Member)

Lew,

Thanks for the tire info.  I greatly
appreciate it.  I live in Salisbury, North Carolina  which is close to
Charlotte.

Thanks again,

David Lingle

The "standard" size tire  for the wooden spoke wheels is 600x19. I
have found that the 650x19 tires won't fit into the wheel well unless
partially deflated. Go for the smaller size.

There are two sources of tires for these old cars. One is Coker Tire (www.coker.com). They offer a BFGoodrich
600/650 at $144 each in blackwall and $200 in whitewall (which Hudson didn't
put on 29 vehicles shipped from he factory).

The other source is Universal Vintage Tire in Hershey, PA.  THey
have the following in the pure 600-19 size:  Dunlop blackwalls for $382
each(!); Firestone blackwalls for $131 and whitewalls for $168; and Lester
blackwalls at $137 and whitewalls at 189. The Firestones are actually
550/600s. They have a very attractive "period looking" tread and sidewall
pattern.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  In addition to buying inner tubes, you absolutely
will want to purchase 19x5 flaps (heavy rubber strip that goes between inner
tube and the rim).  If you don't use flaps, uneven spots will wear holes
in your inner tubes.  And get inner tubes with straight stems, not bent
stems.  Don't ask how I know....

Which model Super Six do you have?  If you're not sure, visit my web
site at http://www.phelpscl an.com/Hudson
and click on the link to "What Model is It?"  Since you mention wood, it'
is almost certainly one of the models built by Biddle  and Smart or
Briggs, rather than the ones built in the Hudson factory, which were all
steel.

car as yet. Can you tell me
the tire size for the wood spoke wheels?
Any help as to where I can get
a spec sheet would be appreciated. The
car appears to be in good
shape other than the roof is gone other than
the wood supports. I am
looking forward to restoring this car.

I have a 1929 standard sedan
with wooden wheels with 650 X 19 on it.
Some use 600 X 19 but I like
the bigger look of the 650 X 19 but are a
little tight getting the spare
into the wheel well. Where are you
located ? I live in Lakewood
California, next to Long Beach. Alot of
great folks own Hudsons. Good
luck, Ron
