26 Vacuum Tank

Attachments :
I have a bit of time to play with the 26 today and so far have not found the problem that is causing the car to run so rich so suddenly. The Hudson started easily this A.M. and I wondered if the problem might have cured itself. However, after just a couple of minutes, it started smelling rich and then started stumbling and smoking. The problem is not cured.

I removed the vacuum line from the vacuum tank. It was dry. Just to eliminate the tank from suspicion, the top was removed. All the bits look fine and seem to work as they should. The float is not full of gas. On trying to reassemble it, I ran into a bit of a mystery. Even with the float needle centered into the orifice at the bottom of the inner tank, the top will not quite rest on the top of the outer tank. The gap is about an eith to a sixteenth of an inch all around. There is no way the float can move up & down and regulated anything jammed as it is at the top of its travel and still not allowing the lid to seat.

How do you get this assembly back together? It was working fine a couple of weeks ago. (I was tempted to say "until I took it apart" but the tank is still under a cloud of suspicion.) I have attached a folder with a few pics of the bits & pieces. The last one shows the mysterious gap which is in question here.
