Hildegard the Humiliated Hudson . . .

Is better, but still not happy.

As you may remember from last time, the Hudson was running very rich, bumbling, missing, smoking, stinking, vibrating, stalling and acting most unhappy. This malady occurred just 30 seconds after a massive backfire through the carbie after shifting into top gear and while in a steady cruise at around 30 mph. The car lost power and became a chore to drive ultimately stalling and requiring a group of theater goers to push her back to the barn.

First the vacuum tank came under suspicion, but was cleared when it was disassembled and found to be in good order. It was tested by running the motor with the top and inner tank removed and the vacuum line disconnected. This allowed feed by pure gravity and resulted in no change at all.

Next, the carbie came off and was taken apart. Once again, everything looked just peachy. Seeing there was nothing wrong we could see, a spare carbie was installed and the car ran just the same.

So, the fuel system checks OK, maybe ignition? We replaced the condenser with NAPA # AL868. This proved to fit fine and I had high hopes for a cure.

Sadly, it was not to be. The car started easily and ran well, but soon started bumbling and misbehaving. I gave it a full warm up and while it is certainly much improved from the time it had to be pushed home, it is clearly not running as well as it should either.

Somewhere in all of the attention the car has received, it has improved but is still not happy. Right now, I have no great ideas to on what to check next. I can see if it likes new points and perhaps switch coils, but after that, what? There is something wrong, something that happened suddenly. This is the same car that drove to Ontario & return without a hitch just a few miles ago.
