Re: [HSS] Speed & RPM ????
Actually, I do not know the MPH per 1000 rpm but it
is easily calculated. My 29 has 18" wire wheels. As far as I know
only the coupe and roadsters had a higher ratio rear end which I put into my
standard sedan. When I got my car in 1967 it had been in continuous use
since built, the last 15 years or so towing a 4 horse trailer to racecorses in
New Zealand. The motor was pretty sick with an embarrasing amount of
blowby. I rebuilt(sort of) a spare motor and had it ready to drop
in. As the car had about 450,000 miles on it by this time I thought it
would be fun to see how fast it would actually go. A friend followed me in
his "modern" car in case the Hudson blew up. At 85mph on a narrow country
road the car was still slowly gaining speed but I chickened out, turned around
and headed for home. When I pulled the engine down later it had the
original pistons flopping about in bores with .017 taper. As I said
in an earlier post to Paul, I was 22 at the time and would not attempt a stupid
stunt like that now. Between 1967 and 1992 I put 170,000 miles on the
car. I did lose a rod bearing on the freeway once but I had had a spare of
each hand babbited and machined so that was not a bit deal. Apart from
that I found the generators tended to overheat and throw the solder from
the armature if they were adjusted to allow night driving. I fixed this by
fitting a generator from a stepdown with cooling fan and voltage
regulator. Water consumption was a chronic problem on long trips,
especially over mountain passes. I always had to carry a couple of gallons
with me. The pumps are so good that they will throw more water up into the
radiator than it can handle, especially at higher RPMs.

The solution was to put a "c" clamp on the hose
between the head and radiator with a string on it so it could not fall off and
get into the fan. After a bit of experimenting a setting can be found
where the motor will run at the right temperature without pushing all the water
out the overflow.

I will figure out the RPM/mph for various diff
ratios and wheel sizes and post it later.

PMSubject: [HSS] Speed & RPM ????I am sure some of you have checked the gearing with the RPMs with the speed
and the wheel size and come up with a good resonable RPM to SPEED that a 1929
in good running condition will do with out hurting the engine. So for starters
we will talk about my 29 with the stock "LOW" gears with wooden wheels I will
ask what High Speed would you cruise at for a long distance ? Are all sedans
Custom or Hudson made with the same low gears from Hudson? And what Hudsons in
1929 had the "HIGH" gears ? Thanks and I hope when I drive my Hudson at 65 MPH
I can say its good and all that noise is just the fan ? LOL. Ron
