Yes, it is negative ground. I don;t know that there is any advantage in

running an 8 volt battery, as I have never had any problems with 6 volts.

It could perhaps tax the generator somewhat by requiring an 8 volt charge, I

don't know. Keeping everything shipshape in the electrical department

should be sufficient, wthout deviating from original.
