Gas tank and water pump advice

Just got a call from the guy who was looking at my gas tank. I

thought I was in pretty good shape because the tank feels pretty

sturdy all around. He said he would have to cutting big holes and

sandblast the inside. (@ $400) I asked about a filter and he stated

that I would be dumping it all the time. What have others done

short of paying the big bucks for a tank overhaul? Can I just get a

screen to put the filer tube in to keep the chunks from clogging up

the suction pipe?

I am getting ready to put my water pump back together. On the

timing gear side of the pump housing there appears to be room for

some kind of packing. It has a small post that appears to keep the

impeller away. Here are the pics:

I am hoping these are short enough not to get cut off when they

post. If they do just go here:

listed.
