Re: [HSS] Essex Detailed Service Manual
Unfortunately there is no workshop which covers the '29 models. As far as the steering wheel boss is concerned, - replace it. There is no way you can rely on 78-year-old pot metal. To remove it you have to first remove the switch gear from the bottom of the column, withdraw the horn button and switch lever shaft, undo the nut, and remove the boss. This is keyed on to the column with a woodruff key. Much easier on our right-hand drive cars, as there is no light switch on the hub. You should be able to follow your nose as far as removing the switch goes. The shaft is held in by a clamp, from memory (I have only had rudimentary experience with left-hand-drive models).
You can get a new boss machined from alloy, brass, or steel, depending on how much you want to spend, or what finish you require. Any decent machine shop should be able to make one of these up for around $150. Good luck,

Subject: [HSS] Essex Detailed Service Manual
Does anyone know where I can find a copy of a service manual that
covers the 1929 Essex so I can identify what is supposed to go where
and how? I have the owners manual but really need a shop manual.
Trying to answer questions ranging from do wire wheels belong on the
vehicle to how do I disassemble the steering system to see if the pot
metal hub is still ok.
Any help would be appreciated.
