Couple of 29 Hudson questions
Work is still progressing on my 29 Hudson. All the cylinders have
been bored out for new sleeves. I have a friend of a friend who
agree to do it for the cost of the sleeves. When the cylinders 3 and
4 where bored out for the sleeves, the pin holes turned into holes
about the size of silver dollar (1.5 inch). 1,2, 5 and 6 actually
came out fine, but you can never tell until you do it. We are still
waiting for additional sleeves to arrive. Karl Hamson generously
(Thanks Karl!) sent me some NOS STD pistons that had some shelf
wear. We are going to take the best of the pistons and use them to
rebuild.
Meanwhile back at my shop, I have been cleaning up the big gapping
hole that used to hold the drive train. I had a number of issues
with my cowl vent and hence some questions.
There are two channels run around the cowl vent rectangle. The
outside appeared to have a rubber gasket, the inner has a drain hole
in the front. There was a scrap of red rubber left in outside
channel, it was 3/8 thick. I am assuming that I need to cut the
replacement so it holds the vent cover at the level of the body. Any
recommendations on material? Where does the drain go to? Is there a
hole somewhere I need to route the drain hose? The cowl vent is just
a flap that opens directly into cab. Am I missing anything? On my
46, there is a screen on the vent and it goes into box with a drain.
Was it this simplistic?
Chrome - The place that has been doing my chrome said they won't do
pot metal. The 29 cowl light brackets are made of pot metal. There
is a place in Iowa that said they would do those little brackets for
$50 a piece! Does anyone know of another chrome place they have used
that is more reasonable?
Hopefully I will have some more pictures soon (of a completed engine)
