Installing Split Rivets on cowl and radiator hood lace

I am having a hard time installing the split rivets for hood lace. Is

there a tool that holds the rivet in place and will spread the rivet

legs. The first one I did resulted in a loose rivet with a scratched

head. I am almost tempted to take some cheap channel locks and modify

them to do the job. Just curious if others have any experience to

share.
