Good news to report
She runs!
Yes, my friend Jack and I actually started and ran my 29 Hudson today
for about 10 minutes. We first tried for about 30 minutes with
nothing but a couple of backfires. So Jack, (he understands ignition
troubleshooting oh so much better than I) went back through every
thing and discovered that we didn't get the compression stroke
right. We were 180 degrees off. I guess that explains the
backfires. I, of course, have much tweeking to do to get her to
idle, but I wanted to get her up to temp so I could retorque my head
bolts - one at a time (good information gleaned from the "stupidest
thing" thread : )
I have to put the drive shaft on and hood, fenders, front skirt,
lights and gas tank. But I can actually see the light at the end of
the tunnel. Will probably have to go through the brakes but that can
be done after she is all together.
Thanks to Karl Hamson, who donated two of the pistons. Sheldon Rody,
for the care package of stuff I would need. John Meadows for the
stainless steel radiator return and bronze carb bowl. Geoff Clark
for the water pump packing and constant advice. Alex Burr for all
the fantastic information online. Lew Phelps for his outstanding
informational site. I also had two friends locally, one sleeved the
cylinders at cost. The other made and pinned on the stainless steel
replacement assessory shaft, and if making the packing nuts for the
exhaust and marvel bypass. Of course my friend Jack who provided all
the ignition know how and encouragement. And no thanks to James
Coats who wouldn't return my calls about engine paint (That was for
you Ron and Paul)
Wow this is starting to sound like an Oscar speech! It is only
missing some kind of Hollywood slanted slam on President Bush. Hey,
that reminds me. My wife put up with a lot of crap and took care my
bratty offspring while I was in the garage (that will of course
continue), so thanks to her!
If I had set out on this without all of you and the exchange of
information, I would never have got this far. Oh m'gosh, Hillary was
right, it really does take a village.
Thanks
Aaron Cooper
