Trouble shooting my 29 Hudson
I thought I would bounce my issues with my 29 off the group. I have
two main issues.
Issue 1: The first is that I am running rich at idle and then loose
power on flat roads at about 40 mph and then on hills I drop down to
25-30 mph. I drove it almost a 100 miles this weekend. After
talking with others, they did not think I was running rich (no black
exhaust) at higher speeds. At idle, I have quite a bit of black
smoke at idle. If my car is backed up to my garage, my tail pipe
leaves a nice "shot gun blast" of black gas.
Here is my plan, I am thinking about reducing my idle and high speed
jet (filling with silver solder and redrilling. My big question is
how much? Is there any other reason I would be running so rich?
I stopped several times to either screw in or out my adjustment
screw on the carburator and in both situations, the carburator
started "coughing/blowing" out the carb. It ran the best when the
screw was even with the top of the adjustment guide.
Could timing contribute significantly to it running rich? I am not
quite sure I have got my timing nailed down since when I manually
advance, my engine runs worse at higher speeds.
Issue 2: My second issue is with my brakes. I have both front
wheels adjusted so they light rub on the brake pads when the car is
jacked up and you spin them (both are the same). I have the left
rod tightened all the way down and I still pull hard to the right.
If I tighten the drum down on the left side I am worried I will
excessively wear the brake pads. It doesn't appear I that I can
adjust the rods any more at the bar. Any thoughts?
I am finally at the point where I am working on all these small
issues. A couple others I am looking at:
My tappet covers wind up with oil dripping out of them. I have them
tight, but should I use a layer of silicon on them to seal better?
Is it possible that it is coming out of the air vent on the back
cover?
I still need to follow Geoff's advice on adjusting my steering, but
that is down on the priority list.
Thanks for any information anyone can provide.
