Re: 1949 Hudson Six
Hello All:
I'm helping a friend with his '49 Hudson. He parked it in 1974 and now wants to start it. We changed oil and poured oil down the spark plug holes and let it sit a few days. He bought a new battery for it and so forth.
We tried cranking it the other day without the plugs and it is turning over very slowly. I've only worked on one other 6 volt car, and that was when I was a kid. Is this normal for a 6 volt to turn over slow? I disconnected the fan belt from the water pump as the pump was very tight and needs looking into at a later time.
All in all, what are your suggestions for getting this puppy fired up. He said it ran when last parked. It's been garaged all these years.
One more question. If I disconnect the generator and not use any lights, can I put in a 12 volt battery for cranking purposes? Maybe install a ballast resistor to reduce to 6 volts once it's fired up?
Thank you in advance,
Don
