Re: Rear End Question

Hi gang,

Last week, while working in England, I had the
great pleasure of visiting Colin Daniels in Northhampton and going for drives in
his 1922 phaeton and 26 Biddle and Smart sedan.  The cars are very original
except for special paint jobs in line with his wedding car business and
necessary additions such as turn indicators.  The 26 has some unpleasant
noises coming from the differential, particularly on over run while
coasting.  Not a howl, more of a resonant grumble.  The only manual he
has is from the earlier cars which shows a different adjusting system for the
pinion engagement.  Does anyone have procedures and data for
getting the mesh set properly on diffs for the middle to late 20s?
There is a 1/2" pipe plug to inspect that the vback of the pinion and rim
of the crown gear are flush but be darned if I could see anything through that
little hole.  Could not even get my pinkie finger in to feel
anything.

On another note, one of the reasons I wanted to see
Colins 22 is to see the foot throttle linkage and pedal setup as my RHD 23 is
missing the pedal and corresponding linkage.  However Colins car is LHD so
no joy there.  Anybody in Aus or NZ or UK have a 23 or older RHD car that
could email me a few photos?

Thanks

Karl
