Early 27 F Head Engine Rebuild

Good day from the novice,

At present, the valve cover, side panel engine cover, and the oil pan

are off. The timing chain has been removed. The water pump,

ecentric and generator shaft have also been removed. The distirbutor

has been pulled. (I had the eccentric renewed because it was in such

poor shape.)

Would someone please explain the following procedure:

1) According the 27 manual in order to replace the timing chain, I

need to first turn the camshaft until the exhaust valve has closed

and the intake valve is about to open on the #6 cylinder. I must

also turn the crank so the #1 and #6 are TDC.

a. How do I perform this task and know that the exhaust valve is

closed and the intake is about to open.

b. How do I determine that the number 1 and 6 pistion are at

TDC. Do I look through the spark plug hole?

thank you,

Rick G.
