Main Bearings
Hi fellas-
I need your help again.
I've got the crankcase prepped for my '28 and I'd like to get your
opinions about a few things.
I've posted some shots in an album on this site called "Main Bearings
for '28". Please refer to these for my questions.
First of all, am I correct in assuming that since these bearings/caps
are shimmed, I can interchange them from one engine to another? I may
want to do that on the thrust bearing, as you'll see below.
The first photo shows the two styles of lower mains I have - one 'case
vs. the other. Is one more correct, or better than the other? The
grooved one came out of the case I'll be using, as did the upper in
photo four.
The second photo shows that between the two cases, both have damage to
the lower thrusts. Neither have any high spots, so at least the left
one looks like it could work, but I was wondering if I could just use
one of the upper thrusts, as shown on the right. I tried to remove the
bearing from the middle cap in the photo, but it barely budged when
using a hammer and wood block. Am I missing something?
The third is for the end cap seal grooves. When I dismantled the first
crankcase, they had wood dowels jammed into them. Is that right? Could
I just use RTV after the caps are in place?
Soon I'll be ready to fit the crank and plasti-gage it. I just wanted
to get some guidance from someone who knows these things before I
screw something up!
Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Ted Amman
