Re: Question for Geoff 23 running hot

I have a timing question for Geoff or anyone else who may
be able to help.  My 23 seems to run very hot.  It is a fresh engine,
starts fine
imageand does not actually boil but is hot hot after runing
for only a minute or two.  You cannot put your hand on the tailpipe or hold
your hand any closer than 18" or so from the tail pipe end.  Exhaust note
sounds a bit flat.  I have rechecked ignition timing and tappet
clearance.  Rad has been cleaned and circulation appears to be
good

I am wondering if I am out a tooth on the valve
timing.  It is a new chain and I laid the old one alongside and put in the
punch marks so I THINK I got it right.  Engine vacuum at idle is 14" which
seems very low.

My H,J and M service manual details how to check the valve
timing with tappet clearance.  However that info is for a gear driven cam
with flat followers so the data is most probably not right for roller tappets
and a chain driven cam.  Does anyone have info on how many degrees after
TDC No1 exhaust should begin to open at say, .005 tappet clearance.  It
would be fairly simple matter to figure out the crank angle by counting teeth
and getting the proportion relative to 360 degrees.  I am loath to pull the
rad and timing cover to check and find I had it right all along.  It may be
that the engine is still pretty tight.  Maybe 2 hours total running time.
No way I can crank it to start it but it always fires up right away with that
big Delco starter

Thanks

Karl
