Need Paint Source
I need a paint source that will package a small quantity of 1950 Emerald Green color-matched paint in a few spray cans for painting at home. I am cleaning up some brackets in the engine compartment and they need to be repainted.
The local paint shops do not offer spray cans. They can match the color (as expected).
Thanks.

I've used these in the past and are probably a better alternative than finding someone to package a bomb can.
You can mix up only the paint you need to spray. They're cheap and readily available - ebay, paint stores, etc. If you're using catalyzed paint you'll still want a mask to wear as well!0 -
Cool!! Now I just need to order the paint.
Great tip for small jobs like horn mounting brackets and wiring blocks (whick is what I am cleaning and painting.0 -

Sad thing is...the first time I used one of these was...cough...gasp...wheez...26 years ago!
The company/product has been on the market a long time...maybe I should buy some stock0 -
I second the emotion! I've used those Pre-Val things for about 25-30 years myself, and they're great!0

Try doing a Google search for Tower Paints. I believe they're in Wisconsin. They can match any paint (even for vinyl and leather) and fill a normal disposable spray can with the product.0

Yes, Tower Paint will pack a rattle can with whatever you desire for about 12-15 dollars. Was very pleased with Munich Silver for touching up scuffed bumper on my wife's Montero. Perfect match. ArtS0 -
Just had two spray cans done to suit my Rambler . They cost me $9.00 Aus the pair and the colour match is perfect. Pity we are down under.0

I market the Hudson Engine Green paint for early cars, and I offer it in aerosol cans. I have this manufactured in minimum lots of 12 cans at a time. I don't know if I could get the manufacturer to do an order less than 12 or not. The best absolute way is to buy a cheap detail spray gun from a place like Harbor Freight (I have one), assuming you have a compressor. Things will be more efficient that way. If you don't have a compressor, go for the Pre-Val cans, they will work I have also used them. The drop in efficiency here is, in a 12 ounce aerosol can there is about 8.5 oz of propellant and 2.5 ounces of paint. Now mind you, that 2.5 ounces will cover quite a bit aerosolized, but still, less waste with the detail gun.

As I do not own a compressor, Pre-Val it is. Howver, Tower may get a call as a comparison paint test.
Now, does anybody ove the current paint code for the 1950 Emerald Green?
And which brand of auto paint is a good choice for me to use (using the Pre-Val)?
Thanks........Ed0 -
Ed, are you certain that the paint is "emerald green" ? I have two sources that show a"Hawaii green" , "Oriental green " and a "Peacock green " for 1950 but no "emerald green" Do you have the code number from the top front passenger door hinge?0

Oriental Green - really dark. My bad.
BTW, the code number is: 25, SN is: 50A54961
I am still trying to get photos posted. I am having image size issues. My camera take standard photos that are over the size limit on this website.0 -
Pacemaker,
After numerous antique cars and numerous more paint jobs I REALLY REALLY like Sherwin Williams auto paint. That is what my Hudson Engine Green is. PPG makes a good product, and so does DuPont. I am not that impressed with Sikkens for what it costs. Spies-Hecker is a great product but hard to find. My advice is to stay away from Valspar. Valspar owns House of Kolor, and all of their good paints are marketed under the House of Kolor line-- which means the Valspar is, well, crap. I have had no luck spraying any of it. It either runs, or dry sprays-- there's no in-between. I'd go with either Sherwin, PPG or DuPont, and you're going to need a single-stage paint (no clearcoat) so go with Acrylic Enamel in whatever you buy. Acrylic Lacquer is the OE finish, but hard to find for environmental reasons. Acrylic Enamel is easy to spray and affordable. It will actually be glossier than the OE lacquer, but if you are trying to match it to OE lacquer, you can dull it a little with some compound after it dries thoroughly. My advice is to call your nearest Sherwin, DuPont, and PPG jobbers and give them your year make model and paint code, and see who can come up with the modern formula conversion. I have a prehistoric Ditzler (which is PPG) number for the Oriental Green- it is-
DAL-40921
PPG may be able to find this number's specs, or you may be able to give it to DuPont or Sherwin and they can convert it to their number. Whoever can come up with a modern formula number, be it any of the paint manufacturers, you can give that number to whichever paint manufacturer you actually want to use and they should be able to cross reference it.
Interestingly, my '29 was painted with a green color very close to the original Reseda Green back in the early 70s. I still had an empty can of Martin Senour paint, manufactured by Sherwin Williams and sold by NAPA with the formula number on it, left over from the paint job. I took the number to my Sherwin jobber and they couldn't come up with anything. But, guess what, the local PPG jobber found it! They gave me a modern PPG number for it, which I in turn took BACK to Sherwin-Williams, and got cross referenced and bought a quart of the color. It matched what was in the old can and on the car perfectly.
If all else fails shoot me an email to HETjames@coatscars.com (drop the HET) and I will have some mixed and send it to you, OR you can contact the guys at autocolorlibrary.com as they specialize in obsolete paint codes, and sell PPG paint.
Best Regards0 -
Thank you, James. I called PPG HQ yesterday and they would not tell me what the product number was. The local paint shop that sells PPG did not have it and told me to call HQ and get it then come back and they would order it. Something was not right there.
I find it interesting that Hudson used some engine paint but not on all. Mine has none. The water pump and thermostat housing "were" black. But my block is bare. I thought it would have been the Ford Edsel Engine Red.
I am going to get a quart of paint to start and see how it goes. I am shooting some brackets and the one section of the floor (surface rust now removed).0 -
Ed, Some years ago a club member named Charlie Regnerus supplied the complete formulas for stepdown paint codes from 51-54. Although he didn't give the 48-50 formulas he well may be able to help. The WTN issue he did supplied about 33 formulas was the July/August 1993 issue. These apparently had been made available from a Detroit body shop. i believe he's still in the roster.0

I think some of the brakets you want to paint should be either black or silver.
as for Oriental Green, my 50 is that color. We matched 77 dodge truck to a perfect color match. How I say it's perfect, is that we never sprayed the inside of the gas door lid, and it matches perfect, and all of my paint charts match as well.
I think your chances of having 77 dodge colors mixed are better than 50 hudson.

The brackets are already Oriental Green. If it is mounted to the firewall, it is body color (as is firewall). The only black I see in the engine compartment is inner fender wells, the radiator bracket and radiator and the battery tray. The fender area that the voltage regulator is mounted is factory paint. So is the area near the firewall under each hood hinge.
So as I clean up the rust (mostly surface), I wanted to return it to the color it was.0 -

Here's another option...no compressor, I bet you could use a bicycle
pump!
