OIL LEEK HUDSON SUPER 6

Geoff, Karl and anyone else who can face it,
Have tried to remove the main bearing cap but although I can tilt it one way or the other it will not clear the flywheel  because the crankshaft and/or the counterbalance weight is in the way, which ever way I turn the crank. I think it would come out if I removed the counterbalance weight, but am reluctant to do that without advice.
What I have discovered is that there is a dead straight oil way, (which looked surprisingly dry and totally unblocked) nearly 1/4'' in diameter which is in the centre of the bearing cap running fore and aft in line with the centreline of the car but rising at an angle of about 20 degrees, the lowest end clearly able to drain directly into the sump. What baffles me is that at the higher end of the oilway I can clearly see the fly wheel when the bearing cap is cocked at an angle.
Also there appears to be a hole halfway along the oil-way leading up to the the white metal bearing but I cannot get a wire through the hole. Is this hole meant to be clear through to the journal?
Curiously the front surface of the flywheel is dry, whereas the two rear bolts holding the bearing cap where they emerge from the cap, and their respective nuts were wet with oil. As these nuts are outside the sump but sort of under the pressed steel flywheel guard, maybe this is why the guard is so wet with oil.
Without removing the bearing cap I have little idea how excess oil is meant to return to the sump.
Martyn Hudson suggests that the rear main bearing may be worn and as a result oil is effectively being pumped out of the back of the engine. Any thoughts on other symptoms for that that wear?
If you kind folk or anyone else has the patience to sort out all this then you deserve a medal,
Robert
