Is it ok to use Grade 5 nuts on head studs?

I would like to replace the head nuts with new heavy nuts (larger, very similar to original) on my 17 head. I am using Grade 8 threaded rod but the heavy nuts only come in Grade 5. Also should I use brass washers under the nuts?
