20/21 Super Six - starting problems.

I've managed to get my car tow started but have had no success using the starter. I've moved the battery close to the starter and linked up using heavy duty cables with a direct earth to the starter. Being 6V it tends to turn over rather slowly.( Battery is 123 Ah.capacity rated at 390 S.A.E cold start). Very good spark at the points and plugs and well primed with petrol - any thoughts ? Planning to try a seperate 6v battery for the ignition to see if that helps.
