Cylinder head studs and nuts.

Hope everyone had a good 4th July.

The block on my 1918 tourer had been resleeved when I got it and I think the engineers had fitted the cyl head studs too deep in the block, consequently there was only a 1/4" showing above the head making insufficient thread for the head nuts. They had used modern nuts also which look rediculously small. On removing the studs the threads had stretched unsurprisingly after over 90 years.

I am going to make new studs and nuts, my question is does anyone know the correct/suitable material which was used in 1918. I get the impression when testing with a file that they are just mild steel, has anyone ever gone down this route before and can advise?

Kind Regards

Peter
