Oil pickup screen.

Continuing the reassembly saga of my engine (1918) just a question about the oil filter screen in the sump. This car has been worked on over the years but am finding much of the work has been poorly done, hence questioning any suspicious looking repairs.

The pickup filter mesh in the sump has been repaired and the bottom surface is solid, not mesh. Is this correct as it would limit the open area to the inside for refilling itself with oil to supply the pickup pipe.

Anyone know if this is correct please?
