1926 steering wheel

Just came back from my 1926 Hudson's first tour and encountered a problem with the steering.  The first day was a 60 mile trip with many mountainous grades and many sharp turns (makes you appreciate power steering).  When going through the turns, the steering wheel would tighten up then snap a small distance before getting tight again completing the turn.  This occurred with right and left turns and can be duplicated with the car standing still and parked.  Several of us on the tour looked this over carefully and all concluded it was the steering wheel (hub?) itself as the snapping movement occurred with no movement in the steering shaft going into the steering box.  I have started taking the steering wheel off, but am puzzled how to remove the stamped cup shaped metal piece with two studs on it that
mounts just below the two small levers. The steering wheel has wooden spokes and wooden rim, with an aluminum or pot metal center. How do you get the metal cup with studs off?  Have any of you encountered this problem?
