Re: 28 Hudson motor puzzle (Hudson Super Five)

Well, I am not any wiser.  I have tried all
the easy stuff including a new condenser.  Tried plug gaps from .050 to
.005.  Vacuum is very steady at 19" going up to 21 after backing
down.  It seems to hit on all six immediately after starting from cold then
settles down to 5 cylinders after a few seconds.  Same problem at any
rpm.  I wonder if the exhaust valve is sticking a tad open.  I doubt
there is water as it loses none and there is no steam in the
exhaust.

On another note, the starter reduction
gears sometimes refuse to engage.  I have to turn them a bit by
hand, sometimes twice, before I get full pedal travel.  This was a problem
with the 25 as well.  I installed a heavy duty push button under the dash
which put current directly to the starter.  If it was jamming I just gave
the button a nudge which would move things to a different position.  No
problem since I put a 29 flywheel, gearbox and clutch in.

Has anyone else encountered this?

When  you say persistent, do you mean No. 5
is not firing at all? Or does it cut in at higher speed?   If it
misses at idle, but runs a bit  more even at high speed it indicates a
bad valve.  Have you tried squirting oil on No. 5 inlet valve stem?
It could be a badly worn stem or guide.    What about holding the
plug lead half an inch from the  plug so the voltage has to build up
higher before  leaping across?   It could be a head gasket
problem but I imagine you would have water showing on the plug if this was the
case.   Try soldering a small light bulb to a couple of wires and
connecting up and placing inside the  combustion chamber to enable you to
look in and see what is happening in there.  If there is any water you
should be able see it.    Be careful you don't poke it in tto
far or you will squash it between the piston and head.
Try  widening the points gap a few thou.   Just a few
tips;   Good luck,

Geoff

Here's one for Geoff or anyone else with any
ideas.  We have a 28 Hudson with a supposedly rebuilt motor.
Starts instantly and no smoke or bad noises.  However there is a
persistant miss on No 5 cylinder.  All others fire fine.

Changed the plug  (twice).  No
difference

Pulled the lead out of the tube in case it was
shorting.  No difference

Put on a new distributor cap.  No
difference

Tested compression.  90-95psi all
across

Checked tappet clearance OK

replaced the plug lead.  No
difference.

The distributor lobes look Ok as do the
points.  There is about .005 slop in the upper portion of the
distributor shaft.  I have seen worse without problems.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Karl
