Did you check the venturi pipe inside of the Marvel part of the manifold?
They burn out and allow exhaust to enter into the intake causing poor
performance. When I got my 29 it would idle but had poor performance
because the venturi was burned or rusted through. New pipe took care
of the problem.

Speed
Thank you Evo, Geoff, Jack and Karl.
Have done all that you
advised and now can get to 58 mph (showing on the satellite navigator borrowed
to check the speedo).
The fuel level in the float chamber was perhaps a
bit low.
The ignition timing I had set exactly as per the book, but I then
advanced it by about 5 degrees
I could find nothing wrong otherwise
The
acceleration seems quite good, but the car is still not too good on
hills.
Maybe I'm expecting too much, especially as I've got the hood up,
which cannot help the top speed on the flat.
Have still got the
original 2'' diameter pipe running from the top of the choke chamber
across the top of the block and down into the outer vent of the exhaust
manifold,
and wonder, with modern fuels, whether this is inhibiting the
power in anyway.
Robert
