loud knock from my 22 E4

Ok, I am looking for conformation about this bad knock I have aquired when my 22 E4 is running. The knock is comming from the rear of the engine and is loudest and most persistent at idle and under engine accerelation. The knocking goes away when the engine RPMs are comming down from high RPMs. I have not had the car on the road because I just finished replacing the clutch so I am not sure what it does under load. My guess is the rear main is gone or going. It could be a rod bearing but I don't think so because it is so loud. Almost sounds like the engine is comming apart.



Next question: is this something I can repair by pulling the pan? And if so are the bearings replacable or an I looking at a complete rebuild with repouring and line boring the mains?



I don't have an engine manual to refer to so I am Lost on this. I am in Southern California so any advice or direction you can point me in would be helpful.



I think the oil pump came out of adjustment or somethng because the guage is not reading at idle but comes back to life at anything over idle.
