1917 Hudson crankshaft

Bruce Simmons is restoring a 1917 Hudson SS. His mechanic said there was a problem with his crankshaft. He is trying to find out exactly what is wrong. I was wondering if there are other year crankshafts that would work. I assume that up until 1922. I think my 29 crankshaft has different weights but does that make a difference. I would also assume that in 23(?) that they went to a timing chain from the gears, that the gear on the front of the crank is different.
