29 Hudson rear Axle

Hello Peter.

On your pion shaft 3/16 is way too much end play in the
shaft.  That needs to be look at and it can be adjusted.

On the oil leakage this is a problem.   High level
of gear lube is a problem.   Also when it get hot it will
expand.

I solved the problem on my 15 Hudson and I did the same on my
29 rear axle.

I use a modern seal for the pion shaft.   Here is
the number and you do not have to do any machine work.

I know you have to full the front flange off and take the old
felt seal out.

The number for the pion seal is   CR
17191   This seal you should get at any good auto part
house.

The end of the axel where the wheels are I use a modern seal
there also.

The inter seal is  CR 17386    On the out
seal where the adjusting nut is you do have to machine the lip off

to fit the new modern seal.   The number for the
other seal is   CR 16054

I did this same thing on my 15 Hudson and it stop the gear
lube from getting on the breaks.

Dont forget to add a air valve.   I use a flip top
oiler to do this job.   You need to drill a hole

about 3 inches on the back side of the ring gear.
This is on the axle housing to let the air expand.

When you put the modern seal in it will build up
pressure.  They do the same thing on modern car and truck
axles.

I know this solved the problem on my 15 Hudson.   I
did not like the gear lube on the white wall tires and the

the wooden wheels.   They stay clean now except for
the dust from the highways.

I hope this help you with your oil problem.
