Re: Electrical question
My 21 Essex 4 has Delco electrics. The car is extremely original including
all wiring which was pulled apart by a previous owner. I put everything back
according to the manual and presto, it started, ran and even showed a slight
charge. After a few minutes it died completely. No spark at all the ammeter
showing a 15 amp discharge with the ignition on. I disconnected the bottom
generator terminal and had good spark and running again. My question is:
This
is a two terminal Delco generator, one field and one armature, no cutout, The
manual shows the field connection at the bottom but the generator is clearly
labeled with the field at the top. The schematic has the bottom generator
terminal wired in parallel with the ignition coil. The manual is obviously wrong
somewhere. Any of you guys know what to do. Does the ignition go to the field or
armature? Do not want to experiment in case I fry things.

Going with the flow (pardon the pun), check that
you have fuel in the vacuum tank - turn the tap off, undo the pipe, turn
the tap on - it should pour out. If this is okay then it can
onlybe the inlet fileter in the carb. Caution - do not tighten
the unput fitting on the carb too much or you iwll crack the
casting. Take the large brass nut off the bottom of the carb input
and clean the cylindrical filter.

AMSubject: Re: [HSS] Fuel Problem?Sounds pretty familiar. Our 25 was doing
that. Removed the drain plug at the bottom of the vacuum tank and
nothing came out. Pulled the tank apart and found about 1/2 cup of
crud and sort of green plastic film. A previous owner had sealed the
gas tank and done it improperly and the seal material was coming
adrift. I wound up cutting the ends out of the tank and removing the
baffles in order to properly clean it. Does your vacuuum tank have a
sediment bowl?Karl----- Original Message -----From: Peter

Tomorrow's
run has just been cancelled - the engine won't run for more than maybe
twenty seconds. I can start it and run it at any speed for a little
while but eventually it starts to lose power and then dies.
Wait a couple of minutes and I can repeat the process. And so
on. It feels like the carby is getting a float bowl full of fuel but
isn't being replenished fast enough. Does this point to
something specific, e.g., clogged filter, or is it a case of go through
everything until the villian of the piece is exposed? I'll probably
do the latter anyway, but guidance is good! I have the standard
vacuum tank setup, no other pumps.Peter
