New 29 Essex owner

Hello all. I'd like to introduce myself. Tom King, Auburn, NY, USA.  I was directed to this group by the moderator on the HET Forum.  I recently purchased a 1929 Essex Super 6.  The car is in relatively good condition by does need some TLC to get it on the road.  I have may questions and would like to start with this one.  The roof of the car looks original but is very dirty.  I wanted to know what the material is that the roof is made from and is there any type conditioner or dressing that is recommended. I'm reluctant to wash it with soap fro fear that it would do more harm then good.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
