Question on Experience with Rod Cap Bearing Clearance

Hi Karl,

Was reading thru the archives on taking up rod cap bearing slop. I'm planning to drop the sump and trough on my 29 soon. Couple months back I noticed the #6 rod had more side play on the crank than the others. I put off this issue till after the holidays, so its getting to be that time.

As I understand what you had done was to remove the lower cap and remove one thin shim on both sides of the cap. The use of the Geoff's "cooking foil" test is where I wanted to get a bit more information. I'm taking "cooking foil" as aluminum foil. Using a piece of this foil folded so that I have 3 times the single layer thickness (approx 0015"). I'm guessing 1" long and 1/2" wide or longer? Laid lengthwise and centered with the direction of rotation along the bottom half of the cap (do I spread oil on the crank or wipe clean?). Then torqued to approx 35lbs and tested for hand rotation resistance with plugs out.  If rotation has resistance versus no resistance with foil removed the shim removal is within the correct .001" amount. Not having done this adjustment before I am a bit hesitant just jumping in without making sure I don't  damage the babbit.

Thanks

Jack
