1911 model 33 Hudson rim trouble

Off era I know, but can any of my brass era pals out there give me a heads up on this odd design to me split rim? I can see the principle of rotating the one side from the other to split the rim but in reality the tyre grips it so hard it appears impossible to budge it. Does one remove the tyre with brute force and then separate the rim for fitting a well lubricated new tyre which should allow the assembly or is there a trick to undoing the assembly with the old tyre still on?
