28 Hudson door handles

I have a 28 Hudson that needs new door handles and window rollers (handles). I have a person who will cast them for me. I have two question. The first concerns the L shaped piece of square steel that is cast into the pot metal door handle. Does this piece of steel need to be cast into a new brass or bronze handle; or is the brass or bronze casting strong enough by itself? Second question: Is it better to use brass or bronze?
