Update.... Main Bearings on My 29
Finished the rear main. After seal removal and cleanup, bearing showed 0.004 overall. Removed one .002 shim both sides, rechecked. Folded foil stopped crank, ok when removed. So Karl's dial gauge test was valid showing .002 up gap which times 2 was the actual measured gap.
Nice work guys! Thanks!
Now for Geoff's recommended Loctite sealer to dry.

Why not check the clearance with foil shims, while you have the sump off.
Ok guys, from what you're saying, the 2 center mains are my knocking problem. I have shimmed those back to 0.0015
I have left the front & rear untouched as both are measuring within the 0.0005-0.002 deflection.
I'll button up the bottom and restart on Monday.
Thanks for the help!\Jack

Wear is typically on the bottom half of a main bearing, and the top half of a connecting rod. Therefore the "hole" will be oval. Taking shims out has worked every time for me. If however, the bearing has been damaged or "run, then indeed you will be trying to bend the

Just as an observation, the method you employ Karl surely only indicates the wear or ovality in the top half of the bearing which , on a main unlike a big end cannot be remedied by removing shims from the cap as this merely reduces the wear in the bottom half of the bearing. If one was to keep removing shims till the clearance was back to one thou measured with the same method then the crank would have been deflected or bent to the tune of the initial wear measured less remaining clearance and would quickly wipe the bearing out on running. Or am I missing something. In my time, wear in the top half of a random main , particularly centre normally has a cause which needs to be found and resolved . Given the model year being the same as mine , I await Geoffs comments with interest too.BestMartynUKSent whilst in transit via iPhone

The 2 center mains, however, were badly out with the center front over 0.010 and the rear center a tad less. Reshimmed the centers to 0..0015. Engine tightened up a bit more based on hand rotation at the fan.
Is it typical for the center mains to get most of the wear like this?
