Engine Temperature Sensor

I fixed the dial end, so it works now, but the bulb end has a 3/8 MPS thread, and so expects to fit into a straight threaded hole and have a compressible sealing washer under the raised flare on the expansion bulb against a seat. See picture attached..
Fine. My car doesn't have that. Don't see anything like it anywhere
No wonder the bulb was dangling from the 1/2" MPT hole in the block when I got this pile of parts.There are suspicious hack saw marks on the fitting in the block at the freeze plug location. Can I suppose that such a fitting exists somewhere, or should I give up quickly and try to machine one, or possibly braze one up from machined pieces?
What have all the experts done?
