I have a 1928 Essex Super-Six.

The vin number on title does not match what I can find on car.

So I can't title her unless I find one that matches.

Heres the ones I found so far:

.....Firewall

.....Front Axle

.....Rear Axle-right side

.....(looking for one on frame right side)

Any other places I can look?

  • For what it might be worth, the Virginia title for my '37 Terraplane shows the engine number, not a VIN number. Fortunately, the car has its original engine.

What numbers do you have so far? It could be that some of the numbers you have are part numbers.

    Geoff.
  • My '32 has one on the front side of the front axle I beam (passenger side), stamped on the web of the I beam. Another on top of the right rear frame rail between the body and the leaf spring mount, (stamped). and a stamped tag fixed to the fire wall with a flat head screw, passenger side about mid way up. My numbers match on all three.

  • I couldn't find one on the frame side, and my title dosen't match either. Were in the same boat.
  • I'm going to try for loss of title....... It was a gift.

On cars of that age, the vin number was most often the motor serial number, stamped into the engine block.

Not on the Essex. The Car numbers ran consecutively from 100,000, being the first 6 cylinder Essex in 1924. They made more engines than cars, so the engine numbers got progressively higher than the car numbers they were installed in. 1928 Essex numbers ran from 706271 to 928657.
