is there a method to check if the heater core is good other than taking it to a radiator shop ? thanks

Are you trying to determine if its plugged?

yes plugged or leaking.

Not heating well I take it? I've tested once for leaks with positive pressure, but if it's leaking it usually smells. Testing for being plugged is more tricky. It may flow water but still have a bunch of junk in it so it doesn't get very warm. Have you tried flowing water directly through it to see if any gunk comes out? Sometimes a good flush will improve performance.

My radiator shop checked mine, told me it was no longer repairable and no charge.
