1950 Pacemaker Drum Brakes

Hi everyone. So the journey continues. My son and I were working on taking the drum off the brakes and they were stuck like glue (still stuck). We did have fun attempting to take one off. Before we attempt to remove them again. Does anyone have any tips on how to remove the stuck drum? It is not seized, the wheel turns freely. The parking break is not on, this needs to be removed so we can replace that too. We tried pounding away at it making sure not to dent anything.
Thanks

Make sure to back off the shoes with the brake adjuster.  The drum will turn freely at the correct gap, but the drum won't pull off.  The tolerance is pretty tight.

Parking brake only goes to rear brakes.
  • I don’t own a 50 pacemaker
    but looking at your photos
it looks like the drum is riveted to the hub

can’t you just  remove the cap and take the spindle nut off and remove the hub with the brake drum on it

You are right 25truck that is all you have to do on the front brakes to get the drum off in the rear you need a puller to get the complete drum off the axle do not forget to repack your wheel bearings when you put it back together.

Everything you need to know about your cars mechanical repairs is covered in the 1950 mechanical procedures manual.  You can down load or view at this Internet address.  The Brake section will guide you through the process of maintenance and/or repairs.

  • The front drums are just a conventional set up like everything else. Remove the cap and then the spindle nut. The rear you need the drum puller

Vrojas:  Here's Paul Schuster's sequential photo series, showing the procedure involved in using a puller to remove the drum.  This is only necessary for the rear drums.  Be SURE to leave the axle nun on the axle, to hold the drum when it comes flying off!  Just back it off a few turns to allow the drum to move a bit before being stopped by the nut.

Your picture is of the front brakes. Like Cheyenne said, remove the dust cap, remove cotter pin, take big nut off.......drum will slide off with ease. On the rear drums, you need a special puller.
