1946 super six opening in the trunk floor

Working on my "new" 1946 super six, there is an opening in the trunk floor, just above the differential.  It looked to have some canvas sewn around some wire to cover the opening?

What is this opening used for?

Thanks!

  • Pressure equalization in the vehicle.  The canvas is a filter meant to filter road dust etc.
  • There should be a type of grate that is slightly raised going over generally where the rear end is.
  • The draft equalizer arrived in 1936 to allow fresh air to circle in the sedan
